Design 1
So before i transferred my shapes over into Photoshop, i decided to see what kind of typeface would work for this design. As my target audience would be aimed at the younger audience, so these frames would essentially be in shops like Topman, Urban Outfitters and Asos. Therefore any stylish/modern or edge San-serif would be fine for this audience. I wanted a typeface that would visually represent my collage style i was going to be creating. Looking through the different styles of typefaces and also referencing back to frames from Urban outfitters and Asos, I noticed a lot of them used a handwritten fonts, but not handwritten as in a elegant, over dramatic script typeface, but more subtle but edgy.
| So this was the chosen typeface i decided to go with. The typeface was called Barrio and for me gave the perfect look and feel. So moving on from the typeface i then moved my shapes into Photoshop. |
Once in Photoshop, i started to play around with shapes,
colours and composition. I knew that i had full control to be as creative as i
got possibly be and this was due to my target audience and the style i wanted
to achieve. So this was my main goal, just to play around with what i had and
see what i could come up with.
Also because i was designing photo frames, most of the
designs i came up with on the spot and most was random, but i suppose that’s
the beauty and fun with collages. I didn't feel like it was important to come
up with a concept, which ever design decision had to have a reason. My
decisions came from my imagination.

So playing around with having the design, landscape as
well as portrait. I also experimented around with the type and seeing if i can
make it a bit more noticeable.
| Still playing around with composition, working with the blend modes and levels in Photoshop. |
| I added a border and tilted the border for the design to look more dynamic. |
| Playing around with colours. |
| Adding different textures in photoshop and applying opacity's and blend modes. |
| Working with Black and White, to isolate colours. |
| I then mocked up a version in a frame in photoshop to give me an idea of how it would look. |
Frame 2
| Just like the first design, the process was fairly similar. Create the shape in Illustration and then go on to modify it further in Photoshop. |
| Experimenting with all kinds of textures and materials in order to get the effect I'm looking for. Also It was important for me not to add to many colours by just keeping to one or two. |
| Using the same type layout as in the first design just to keep them recognisable throughout. |
| Experimenting with different colours |
| I decided to keep with the circles as a current theme throughout my designs. It's great to see where my influences came from and using selective colours contrasts extremely well with the black and white background. |
| Mocked up into a frame. |
Design 3
| As again, same process. This time i tried to avoid repeating my self but producing the same design as the other two, but at the same time still wanted it to link. |
| Kept with the newspaper material as it works great with the grid and gives of a natural authentic collage look. Also keeping the type the same. |
| What i started to do is, repeat the shape i had created in illustrator over and over again. |
Once i added the circle, the design reminded me off Japan. Also all the shapes reminded me off a window cracking but in a abstract style.
| Started to play around with lines, adding in lines to random parts of the shape, which i felt worked out very well. |
| Mocked up in a frame in Photoshop. |
Also once i was happy with all my designs, i then save them as a background (without the text on them) and then placed them into Indesign where applied the text to the image. This assured my text to be clean with a high resolution. Type + Bitmap =
Wrong. Type + Vector =
Correct
Some screen shots of when i adding text in Indesign.
