Studio Brief 2 - Study Task 2

Q: Who designed the book cover, are there any links between them and the book?

A: Massimo Vignelli was responsible for his own book cover. Vignelli is a famous designer who works on a variety of Design/Arts subjects from Drawing to architecture. However Vignelli is a well renowned modernist designer and the cover of his book reflects a very modern and simplistic approach.

Q: Whats the intended message

A: The intended message of the cover is one of simplicity. The cover highly reflects the message and content of the book. The book reflects Massimo Vignelli modern principles & rules for Graphic Design from grids, layout, type, colour and so on.

Q: What are the semiotics behind the message and how/why have they been used to support the message/content?

A: The use of colour and type all connects to a modern approach. Vignelli has used his own rules expressed in his book to design the front cover. Using Helvetica is one of the Vignelli chosen 7 typefaces that he recommends and deems to be appropriate. Also Helvetica is a modern font which also links back to the modern principles. Vignelli also used a bright, vibrant Orange colour for the book. Vignelli talks about colours in his books which explains why he used a primary colour for the front. Vignelli said " We like the use of primary shapes and colours because their formal values are timeless".

Q: Is the cover successful in communicating the message/content?

A: I would say yes. Vignelli shows of his principles and theories communicated in his book. From grids, typefaces, colour and font sizes is all very well put into practise on the front cover.

Q: Are there any counter arguments, if so how could they be communicated?

A: The only argument would be that maybe Vignellis was to stubborn to look at any other approaches to further the visual aesthetics? Vignelli could of used or researched different design techniques to strengthened his cover, however on the other hand if he used other influences then he wouldn't be true to his own design rules and would come across hypocritical, which could damage his credibility.
