Studio Brief 2 - Study Task 3

For Study task 3 we were asked to create a layout by using feedback by other on our chosen book. With that information we would quickly come up with a layout by only using typography.

The study task points were:

  1. If your descriptive words are negative subvert them.
  2. Choose a typeface, which is representative of your feedback.
  3. Define a hierarchy of information (Author/title/subtitle)
  4. Choose type style/size/alignment appropriate to your above decisions.
  5. Work only in black and white.
  6. Purely typographic, no symbols/imagery.

Words:

  1. Vibrant
  2. engaging
  3. iconic
  4. minimal
  5. spacious
  6. timeless
  7. relevant
  8. modern
  9. liable
Out of all these words, i felt the best font which summed up this list is Helvetica. I could only use 7 typeface out of Vignellis collection. I wanted a modern font, therefore i had two choices. Futura or Helvetica. Helvetica for me was more timeless and aesthetically pleasing modern typeface.

Hierarchy

Title - This would be the obvious choice. The title is the most important section of the whole book.
Sub-title - This is normally the second important section as it links in tightly to the title, due to it being an extension of the title.
Author - Unless you have a big ego, then the authors name should be last in the hierarchy unless the author is the main selling point for the book.

Type style / size / alignment

Style : bold - attention grabbing, liable, readable, timeless!
Size - Any size would be appropriate. Small does in fact communicate a more modern feel but large type makes the text more readable, which also links with the kind of work Vignelli does.
Alignment: Left alignments - basing the alignment from Vignellis principles.

With all aspects above agreed upon, this was the final result. Everything the design communicates is all from the rules and aesthetics are all from Vignellis book.
