Studio Brief 1 - Research

Looking at the different kind of photo paper, i looked into how the design varies between target audience. Companies like BHS, John Lewis and Debenhams will produce designs for the uppercase market so designs will be more elegant, modern and clean. On the other hand, companies like Urban outfitters, Asos and Topman aimed all there designs at a more younger generation, so photo frames and photo paper products on these sites will be more edgy, artistic and just the complete opposite from designs from John Lewis and BHS.

Below I've showed some examples from these two target markets.

BHS - Clean looking modern design.

BHS - This could be classed a more edgy then the previous design. however it's still quite elegant and using a script typeface is more in favour of a upper class target market.

John Lewis - Simple Modern

John Lewis - Script typeface and floral pattern shows elegance and maturity.

All together all the above design have similar design features which appeal to an middle/upper class society. Script typeface appeals to females as script is elegant and feminine. Also most of the designs use neutral colours, like Grays and creams to suggest subtly and easily to communicate for an older generation.

Below is designs for a younger generation.

Urban Outfitters - Post modernism design.

urban Outfitters - Simplistic design, use of illustration to keep an artistic look.

Urban Outfitters - Nice use of illustration, good use of typography.

Urban outfitters - Hand lettering typeface.

Asos - This design only uses type, however you can still gather what audience it's aimed at. Good use of typeface.

All the other designs from Urban Outfitters and Asos are complete contrast to the photo frames from John Lewis and BHS. Designs from Urban Outfitters are most artistic with more use of colours, illustrations and patterns. Also the typefaces are more edgy and a complete contrast to all the other photo frames.

Studio Brief 3 - Topic Design

This is the design i created to display my research i collected about my topic, which was about cosmetic surgery and why people get it done in the first place.

Studio Breif 3 - Newspaper research

So today we got given Studio brief 3 and Simon explained what we had to do. We told us to go out on Saturday and grab a couple of newspaper, pick one story and research about it for Monday. We had to also try a pick a story that was interesting to use and that the same story was in a few papers so we could compare how a story is read, perceived and displayed around different papers.

So on Saturday, i went out and brought 3 papers. The sun, Daily Express and The Guardian. In the end i decided to for for the article about cosmetic tourism where a woman in Britain travelled to Thailand to get bum implants but ended up dying once under anaesthetic. My next step was to go and analyse the story and see how its been written on the newspaper.

Article from The guardian. I talked about how the title is very small along with the 4 column layout suggests the kind of audience who reads the guardian, upper, middle class. Also the use of information from Leeds university and the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (Bapras) who are all very reliable sources.

The suns article is pretty disrespectful of the victim who died. The huge title and the limit supply of information just tells me that their audience is lower class and has the attention span of a gold fish. Also labelling the man as a butcher and getting there sources from a trip advisor review. So comparing this article with the daily express and the Guardian is complete contrast to each other.

Article from the Daily express, the use of 2 images instead of one is different from the other articles. This article is pretty similar to the Guardian, the san-serif typeface, the 4-column layout and gathering information from reliable sources. However apart from the massive title, which shows that there audience is sort of similar to The Guardians but no as low as the Suns.
