Poster design is one of the earliest forms of advertisements and was first produced in the mid 19th century but french advertisement for new products and was once of the crucial tools for visual communication. In the early days Poster design was a big game changer for typography as poster were mainly designed to be read at a distance. One of the earliest designers of posters were Henry Toulouse-Latrec and Henry van de Velde

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Moulin Rouge - La Goulue, 1891
Henry van de Velde, Tropon, 1898

Poster had many uses throughout history. Poster were a big tool for promotion especially political parties and was also used for propaganda through out wars. Another massive use was advertisements.

Example of a propaganda poster used by American to recruit soliders

Another example of propaganda used by the Nazis. The Nazis saw propaganda as a massive tool to indoctrinate peoples views and beliefs against political issues.

Posters were a massively popular due to there ways of reaching mass audiences, there visual presence made sure they stood out from the crowd and are cheaply made as well as being easily stuck on any surface. Even though the digital age is in the here and now, posers are still being designed in mass quantities.

Posters as visual communication

This advertisement for WWF is amazing well produced. It communicates the message extremely well. As soon as you see the gun on the child you instantly think, why? this in return gathers the attention of any body walking past.

This advert really connects well with the target audience You can tell the target audience is aimed at parents or any person who has children in their life. Looking at the ad triggers a parents instinct to protect their child and seeing this would obviously shock and disturb the audience. Which is what is needed sometime in order to get people to listen.
