Studio Brief 1 - Study Task 2

Design Principles

So today was a very interesting workshop with Amber. This may be a bit hard to explain but ill give it a go. So we were split into groups of 3 and we had to chose a certain letter from a certain typeface, we choose the letter A and the typeface name which i can't remember.....oops.However this was the typeface below.

So once we had chosen out letter and typeface we had to deconstruct it into a variety of panels. Like an illusion so if you saw the "A" from the side it would just look like random shapes but looking at it from in front the individual shapes will line up perfectly to create an "A". It's very similar to what the channel 4 advert was about.

Unlike the channel 4 advert, we had no budget just cardboard and only 2 hour to make it. The only rules we were given was to have a minimum of 4 panels and to work will gradient of whatever colour. So on we went making this A.

So as you can see from one angle, it just looks like random object but in the other angle it creates the number 4

Unlike the channel 4 advert, we had no budget just cardboard and only 2 hour to make it. The only rules we were given was to have a minimum of 4 panels and to work will gradient of whatever colour. So on we went making this A.

This is how we broke the letter down. The letter was going to be broken down into 4 different pieces. Starting from the back would be the crossbar (1), then the left stem (2), followed by the right stem (3) and lastly the serifs (4).
We had only cardboard to craft the different shapes out off.

To create the colour gradient used paint, however using paint wasn't a good idea as it caused a lot of problems to the cardboard, the cardboard couldn't hold its strength and began to weaken as the paint began to soak in. In the end this lead to more time fixing problems and adding extra string to support the cardboard.

Another requirement was to build a viewfinder as this would be the area of focus.

Using string to hold up the cardboard (was pretty difficult and time consuming)

"A" beginning to take shape.

So this was the finished "A" from the side

And this was the "A" was the front! finished with 5 min's spare.
All together i actually really enjoyed this task, this process of design is a big interest subject of mine as I've wanted for a long time to create something like this. Our group worked really well together and all made considerable effort in order to create this in the time frame we had.
