Throughout Studio Brief 1 a lot of production methods and consideration have been thought of in depth and implemented within my development to ensure my final resolution is as effective in terms of effectiveness and efficiency on a personal and commercial scale. The production consideration looked at are as follows:
- Stock choices
- Folding styles
- Budget
- Printing techniques
- Timescale
- Scale, size, dimensions
- Colour management
Stock Choices
For my leaflet for brief one the consideration I had to take in was what was the overall purpose of my leaflet. The leaflet was designed so it would fold out like a poster whilst starting off as a leaflet. The leaflet was a 3x3, therefore the stock has to reflect the practicality of the 3x3 grid. If the GSM of the stock was too thick then the leaflet would have trouble folding without it looking bulky and unprofessional. However too thin then the overall look of the leaflet could communicate a cheap and flimsy appearance. Taking this on board I ended up going for a paper weight of 150gsm, I allowed my self the range of GSM from the maximum of 200 and the minimum of 120, this could then give me more options of paper and allows me to experiment with this range which would allow me to chose the stock that was more efficient and most practical for the leaflet set up.
Folding Styles
Folding styles is a crucial part to how the user will interact and see your leaflet. Different folds can communicate a different purpose and your fold should also have the user in mind. My fold was a 3x3 grid fold that opened up into a two sided poster. You have to also be careful about how many folds you implement within your leaflet as too many folds can have a direct effect on the layout of the text. It can become an issue to set out your text without it overlapping the fold which is unprofessional and lazy but the less grids you have then you end up having more options and flexibility with the layout.
Too many folds can also make the leaflet un-foldable and bulky, therefore my fold was limited to a maximum of 4 folds. Having less then 4 folds then the leaflet can be seen as to basic and not very interactive when the user is unfolding it. With my leaflet even though it was a very basic fold method, I backed it up with a poster that the user can keep and hang up on their wall. It also allows me to use the whole space of an A3 sheet to fill with information and not waste any part of it by cutting it down to fit the requirement of a complex fold. This saves time and is also cost efficient and will help on a small scale and also commercially.
Budget
My approach for the budget of the project was based entirely around my target audience and what I thought they could afford. My target audience were young creatives and people around the ages of 16 - 23. Therefore, most young people do not have a high budget so in fact most probably have low paying jobs or are in education. Therefore the leaflet had to reflect a young person who had a low budget. That means that every consideration had to be thought out to ensure that this was the cheapest option and what we was making was efficient.
I had to also think about my budget and creating the leaflet at a small scale. My budget was not high, this effected my decisions also. I had to consider how to make the leaflets on a commercial level and at a small scale level. I had to think about the limited resources in the college and how these limitation effected the production method at a small scale and commercial. However, If I chose to print my leaflet off at a commercial level then where would I find the correct resources, who would I go to and how would I communicate to the printers about the printing requirements, stock and print finishes. All of these possibilities had to be considered If the opportunities had risen.
Printing Techniques
I printed my leaflet onto the laser printers which is the cheapest option when compared to any printers in the print room. But commercially, in order to get the cheapest printing option then using litho would be the cheapest. Litho printing is the cheapest method of printing at a large scale due to the unit cost going down as the quantity goes up and the flexibility of stock choice and quality.
Timescale
Timescale of the project effected a lot of the decisions and choice of the leaflet. We only only had a week to complete the brief, therefore design decisions has to be made fast and some times a lot of the development and methods couldn't be achieve due to time scale. I wanted to experiment with screen printing my leaflet but due to how long we had on the brief, it wasn't possible. This sometimes stopped me in my tracks and made me think about other techniques and method I could use that could get the same effect and outcome. Most often being restricted by time can be a positive thing. It can force you to make decisions that you wouldn't necessarily take. Screen printing my leaflet would of been an expensive method that would of gone against my approach to make a cost efficient leaflet, so it made me rethink to make a better decision in regards to cost efficiency.
Size
The size of the leaflet was very important aspect which can save you a lot of money and time. When the project first started my leaflet was going to be a custom size, so I would of had to print my leaflet of at A2 and cut it down to get the custom size. This would of been a costly approach and a waste of paper. From that I decided to scale down my size to A3 which still worked as effective then at the custom size.
Colour
My leaflet was CMYK due to it being a printed document. However, looking back I wished I had used a spot colour as this method would of been cheapest. Pantone colours only use one colour instead of 4, like CMYK. So if i wanted to keep with my cost saving approach then this method would of been best. Also my leaflet Is double sided and in full colour and that is also not the best solution to create a cost efficient leaflet, but then sometimes you have compromise with price in order to get a higher quality print and is visually pleasing then having every aspect of the leaflet cheaply made or cheaply produced then you would just have a very basic and cheaply made leaflet.
