Studio Brief 4 - Evaluation

Brief 4 was the first time we had touched upon user experience design and web design. UX design is such an important part of Graphic Design but especially when it comes to digital design, therefore it was nice to purely focus on UX for this brief. UX design is something in which I had done in the past, I was knowledgeable to a certain extend and that made the brief very, very enjoyable and a lot easier then to people who had never touch upon UX before. UX design is an area that I want to move into after uni, so you can see it’s a big interest of mine. Another huge aspect of the brief that I found extremely worthwhile was having two design studios come to visit us. One studio was purely specialised around UX design and the other studio called ‘Only’ who were specialised around digital design. The design studio ‘Only’ helped create brief 4 and it was based around a live brief they had done for Bring me the Horizons for Sony Music. This was inspiring to see a small studio that had worked on such a big brief like that and wanted to teach us and give us advice at the same time, which I was extremely grateful for.

There was nothing I disliked about the brief. I had a great time working on it and hopefully it showed within the campaign I created for my chosen band. However, there are a few aspects I would change if I were to go back and redo the brief. First of was the same problem as in brief 3 with the time management and slowing down when I was ahead of schedule. Secondly, I found it difficult to move away from my first concept that I came up with. I like my first concept and knew it could work very well conceptually and as a campaign. That aspect stopped me from coming up with newer concepts as I had already move forward with the idea and didn’t look back, which isn’t the best method for the development. I think the source of that problem was because I found it hard to come up with a concept/idea that came close to the first one, In that regard I didn’t think it was worth while spending ages coming up with something better when I could of already moved forward with the one I already have. The last thing I would change Is coming out of my comfort zone more and trying out different styles then what I felt comfortable with. I explained in the blog that I was originally going to pick a band that was more country/folk but expressed my concerns for the aesthetic style of that bands artwork and that I wouldn’t feel I could do a the artist justice, which led me to stick to a band that I could do a great job with and that was more of a metal genre. Hopefully over time I will end up feeling more confortable to come out of my comfort zone and try new styles.
