Editorial is an area of Graphic Design that
I’ve come to heavily appreciate and take a great interest in since coming to
university so I was delighted to know that brief 3 was based around creating a
publication based of the images and content we had gathered for the summer
brief. The summer brief made the process and development of the brief 3 a lot
easier and exciting. The aspect of the brief, which I found most beneficial and
enjoyable, was the fact that it was up to us as the students who decided what
our outcome of the brief was going to look like. It was down to us if we wanted
to make the brief interesting or not and that was because of the location in
which we took photos of for our summer brief. I took photos in Berlin and that
made the brief worthwhile and relevant as Berlin is the design hotspot of the
world at the moment, so in that sense I had a lot of time to collect influence
and travel to see different areas and museums in Berlin and all of this allows
my publication to focus more on unique and contemporary style. With brief 3, I
felt that I successfully dealt with the design consideration very effectively
and in depth. I made sure I gathered primary research and understood the target
audience needs accordingly then in any other brief in this module and it’s demonstrated
clearly with the final publication.
The only part of the brief that I disliked
in a way was that it was sometimes unclear how we had to translate the
information we had for the summer brief into our publication. The summer brief
was about collecting images of typography from A-Z so everyone thought we had
to reflect that for our publication and that caused a lot of problems for
people as some of their images might not of been as high quality as they would
of liked. A lot of people were in limbo for a while, as we all didn’t know if
the brief was flexible at all. However, it was all eventually made clear to us
all.
The only improvement when looking back at
brief 3 is my time management. Unlike brief 1 and 2 we had a lot more time with
the deadline for this brief. This quickly became unproductive for me, half way
through the brief I quickly discovered that I was quite ahead in terms of the
development of my publication and with that in mind I began to slow down and
take things easy and I thought that I had plenty of time to finish everything
else. I did have plenty of time but it soon caught up with me to the point
where I was beginning to get behind. I should have taken that extra time to
experiment more with the publication to make the concept and design stronger
and more successful.
