Studio Brief 2 - Study Task 1

What is a book? Books don't necessarily need to be your bog standard book from a book self. Books can be anything with pages which showcase a collection of information. A leaflet or a newspaper is technically classed as a book, they have folds which correlates to pages and have a purpose of delivering information to the audience.

How is a book constructed?

  • Folded
  • bound
  • sewing
  • glued
  • stitched
  • strapped
  • bulldog clip
  • spiral bound
  • treasure tags
  • accro binding clips
Which binding method the designer or company chooses will come down to a number of aesthetics.
These will include:

  • Budget
  • content related
  • time period
  • aesthetics
  • functionality
Below are a number of books which i have collected and will analysis them. Taking on board the construction of the book and the functionality of the book. Also is it successfully and does it relate to the content.

Pizza Hut menu flyer
Purpose -  The purpose of the Pizza Hut flyer is to be distributed at a high capacity with low cost.
Stock - Thin paper stock with small GSM. This is so the flyer can be easily produced at a low cost. Also the small GSM can make folding easier, allowing for people to put through letter boxes and to fold up and to be squeezed into small places.
Binding - Folded bind to save money. All about distributing their menu for the minimum price possible
Colour - Limiting colour, mostly black and white. Save money on printing.

Purpose -  Thick stock along with double fold binding to make the book look like a high quality finish. Designer magazine.
Stock - Thick to medium stock, so the book looks thicker and better quality.
Binding - Double folded bind & stitched. Doubled folded will be used to make the book appear thicker as the book doesn't have a lot of pages. Then all the pages are stitched together in a tightly compacted way.
Colour - Mainly black and white to save money but images are in colour. Can't have only black and white when the binding and stock has been used to give the book a high quality feel.
Purpose -  To be viewed digitally. Digital versions of book will be the death of physical book. Due to convenience and how easy it is for the user to purchase and download books from home instead of going to the shop.  Also you don't have the hassle of carrying around 700 page book. However to certain people there's nothing that compares to a physical book, the feel, smell, texture and having a book in your hands will keep many people from turning to the dark side.
Stock - No Stock. Stock doesn't effect the experience once being view digitally. Colour choice of the background is the closest thing to the stock.
Binding - Digital
Colour - Black and white, to save battery so readers will have a longer reading experience.  You can only get books on kindles, so coloured text and images are not available.
Purpose -  Newspaper version of a magazine. Cheaply made to be high produced and distributed.
Stock - Cheap thin stock, due to this book being a newspaper. The company would want to print as many as possible. So the thinner the stock the cheaper the printing and also it allows for the newspaper to have a lot of pages while not worrying about making the newspaper to thick.
Binding - Folded together. Best way to save money. cuts out the middle man.
Colour - Suppose the money they have saved, would be used on colour. Colour will make the newspaper more appealable to the target audience. Having only black and white would make the newspaper to professional looking and dull.
Purpose -  Greetings card. Cheap to buy so will be cheap to make. Meant to write messages into and to be discarded within a month.
Stock - Card stock. Very white, cheap stock. Cheap to buy and cheap to be mass produced. Probably printed on a large stock and then cut down. Thin GSM to also save money.
Binding - Folded bind. Simple to cut down the price. Cutting out the middle man. Easily folded and sent out. Main reason why birthday/greeting cards are so cheap.
Colour - The inside is also black and white text with the outside being in colour. Full colour on the front may be only possible due to the stock? as it's card the stock wouldn't need a lot of ink to sink in the card. Also saving money through the binding method.
Purpose -  Sketch book, meant for artists to draw/sketch or even use as a note book.
Stock - Thick stock. cartridge or watercolour paper. Thick paper is need for artist to work on. Thin paper would do go for paints and other artist materials. Having thick stock will up the cost of the sketch book but you get what you pay for. Quality
Binding - Ring bound? Useful so the page can be easily ripped out or other necessary methods. Also this binding method is great as the pages can lay flat which other methods like case bind wouldn't be able to provide, which is beneficial for the user.
Colour - No colour inside. Only blank pieces of paper.
Purpose -  High quality looking design book for people interested in typography.
Stock - Medium to thick stock. Quality texture to the paper. Font cover is leather, which will increase price of the book but it maintains style and a creative look. Also most designers will not buy a cheaply made book about design.
Binding - Case bound. As the target audience is aimed at creative then the book production will have to be well crafted to attract designers. If the book is cheaply made then it's considered a contradiction when the book is made for designers for probably know the ins and outs of making books.Colour - Full colour. Same reason for the previous points above.
