Studio Brief 3 - Font Cover Ideas, Tape Experiment

Tape Experiment

For this front cover idea, I wanted to try a conceptual approach to the front cover, essentially something that would allow the user to be apart of the experience, like they were there or pretended to be apart of the trip and what a great way to do it by being aloud to take a photograph from the book with ease and to either stick it to your wall or even use it as a postcard or whatever you wish. First of the photograph would be in a similar style to when people years ago would go to the photo shop and print their holiday photos from their dispensable point and shoot cameras. The idea would be to individually print out a photo of Berlin separate from the front cover , (which would be the black and white image in the photo below). Once this was done, position it on the front cover accordingly and then with a piece of tape, position the tape over the image, securing it in place.

I first saw this technique of using a separate photo on top of the front cover in village book shop. I knew this technique is very new and modern, the main concern i had was that it probably has been vigorously overused technique in many books/publications.  Therefore i wanted to try something new that I hasn't been seen before but still communicates a personal feel, connecting the reader and the content in a new, exciting manner.

Using this method would reconnect people back to when photography weren't viewed digitally. Especially in today's day where Polaroids and film cameras are becoming popular again, therefore this method would communicate with my target audience as a lot of creative people are very open minded about old photography techniques.

By using the tape it allows easy access to the photo, if the user wants it. All they have to do it peel back the tape. The tape adds a visually new, contemporary aspect to the cover and together the photo and tape is very tangible and interactive feel adding something special to the book.

Another huge benefit would be the cost efficiency when it comes to printing the book. With this feature of the photo and tape on front cover, the text becomes irrelevant due to the photo and tape being a strong enough design aspect to catch the interest of passers by. Therefore, if no printing is required for the front cover then production of the front cover would be a lot cheaper due to it not requiring any printing.

The below images is me experimenting with the positioning of the tape to see what works best for the overall aesthetic but most importantly the functionablility and ease for the user.

The individual photos of Berlin printed out separately. Gloss paper to fit the style of the days of when you would go to the printers to print your holiday photos from your click and shoot disposable camera.
