Studio Brief 1 - Chosen fold

The fold that I have chosen for my leaflet is the half and half fold *not the official name*. It's functional and retains is timeless and clean aesthetics. The fold is one of the simplistic folds out there to do, therefore it will be very cost efficient if mass produced. Another huge benefit of this fold is that i hope to double it's functional use. Not only have it as your standard leaflet but also a poster. The user could take the leaflet home and unfold it and use it as a wall poster  making the overall impact a lot stronger as the poster would be constantly seen and kept, where as your everyday leaflet would be discarded or kept in a draw.

My initial idea for the fold was to have the overall dimensions at a 4x4 grid fold. This ensured the leaflet was small enough to fit comfortable in a pocket while also leaving plenty of space for information. I'm yet to decide what size to have the poster but A3 seems the most logical size, as A4 would be too small to comfortable work within a 4x4 grid fold. The main thing i have to keep in mind is the stock weight because there are so many folds, that the stock will end up becoming to thick to fold. With this in mind i experiment with different kinds of stock like card, newsprint and printer paper to see what works best.

The problem

The main problems i encountered was the size and fold. At A3 the panel size was to thin and therefore making the overall leaflet to small for it's purpose, the only way i could get over this issue was to decrease the folds and instead making the overall leaflet 3x3 instead of 4x4 this will make each panel wider. The other way to solve this issue was to increase the size of the paper into a custom size which will be suitable but having the size bigger then an a3 could get a lot more expensive.

The next problem is the opening of the fold. Once you start to open the leaflet the inside of it is hidden until you open the last half of the page. This is a problem for me as i wanted the inside to be on show once you start to open the leaflet but this wasn't the case as it was blocked by the fold method.

I ended up solving this problem by keeping the same fold but changing the direction of the fold. Before i was folding the paper in half and then in half again to get the 4x4 but when i folded the paper from the bottom upwards this ended up solving the issue.
