Studio Brief 2 - Chosen Kickstarter Company

Today we got given the second studio brief of 504. We essential had to go onto KickStarter chose a project and create a new logo or even branding for this company if we felt that their current logo and, or branding wasn't up to a certain standard.

Flicking through the sheer amount of Kickstarter projects, I came across two very different projects that i couldn't decide which one i wanted to chose. One was a project about a news site all about collating the news from the different China towns across the world. The other was a project about using remote control cars to help defend Tortoise from Ravens.

I weighted up the pros and cons and decided to stick with the tortoise project as it was a lot more informative and it's also for a good cause to help protect the desert tortoises.

This is the kickstarter page for the project 'Hard Shell Labs'

This is currently the logo for 'Hardshell Labs' As you can see it's not the best looking logo. Visually it's poorly designed and doesn't represent a modern technology start up. The company has had a lot of press. The CEO has been featured on BBC news and also done a talk on TEDX. With this in mind there branding should represent a serious company who are out to protect the desert tortoise. Overall their logo is bland, outdated and an eye sore. However the only positive is that the icon used for the logos doesn't represent what the company is protecting and by using green they have established semiotics that come with green. Green represents organic, wildlife and nature, all summing up the brands core ethos.

This is the website used for Hardshell Labs. As you can see it's a visual abomination. The design of the site makes you question if anyone could take the company seriously. I would also be redesigning the website just to give the company an overall face lift, that translates into a modern looking, easy flowing, great user experience.

About Hardshell Labs

"Hardshell Labs is built around a vision of connecting people with Nature using the latest tools technology has to offer. And we will start with the Desert Tortoise. The Guardian Angel Rover is the device that will connect us with the world of the Desert Tortoise.

The money we raise through this campaign will go to refining the Guardian Angel Rover. This is a modified radio controlled rock 1/10 scale rock crawler. We have made it an Internet connected, camera equipped tortoise observation device.

Kickstarter funds will help move the rover along the path from prototype to a version ready for widespread use by an online community of supporters.Your money will pay for equipment, and design and testing by our engineers."
