Studio Brief 1 - Primary Research

As I'm starting on the sketching process, getting my ideas onto paper. I decided to conduct some primary research. My target audience for the leaflet would be young creatives who were entering the world of Graphic design or any creative industry in general. What makes this primary research effective is that every person in Leeds College of Art is essentially the audience that i trying therefore I'm never far away from my audience.

There were two questions that i wanted to ask and these questions will impact the direction of style i will end up moving forward with.

Q1. When you are looking at a leaflet/poster are you more visually attracted towards colour or black and white?

Q2. When you are looking at a leaflet/poster are you more visually attracted towards photographs or illustrations?

The first question will allow me to know whether or not i should work with colour or black and white. I wanted to know if there was a massive difference or a right out majority who preferred b/w or colour because if there wasn't a massive different and only a few more people preferred colour. I would end up choosing black and white as i would way up the advantages of printing in black and white and that would be the cost efficiency. However if the majority voted colour then i would rather spend more on colour if the target audience would end up picking up and reading the leaflet.

The second question would allows me to know if i should only use vector illustrations or only use photos. I know that illustrations have a better response with younger people and photos with older people. So conducting a survey would clear this up.

As you can see from the results below. The overall majority preferred colour over black and white. Also the majority preferred illustrations over photos.
