Studio Brief 2 - Logo & App Logo CAN POST

‘Trumpft's Whitehouse Race’ needed a logo and an app store logo to give the concept and game a realistic touch and the brand an identity. The game needed a logo that subtly insulted Trump, his policies and opinions about controversial topics. The first initial thoughts was to somehow incorporate a mosque into the logo and make it appear as if it was the Whitehouse. This aspect would obviously offend Trump and his supporters but through subtlety the mosque could be disguised. On another note Trump supporters aren't exactly educated, therefore some supporters probably wouldn't batter an eye lid and just think it was the Whitehouse. The logo would essentially be the first thing the user would see, so It needed to set the tone of voice and implement a touch of political satire.

Another idea was to implement the wall that Trump promised to build across the border between America and Mexico. All these ideas would fit the satire approach to the game but design wise It felt adding in a mosque or wall would overkill the logo. 8 bit graphics are striped back and very minimal so I wanted the logo to reflect this aesthetic. In the end the decision was made to go for a type only logo. The typeface chosen was 'Upheaval TT' an 8 bit typeface. Once the user sees the typeface they will understand that the game they are about to play is an 8 bit style game. Based on this fact the 8 bit typeface was chosen to communicate the style and aesthetics of the game from the offset.

What's effective about this logo is even though it's a type only logo it still finds manages to insult Trump for the fascist views he prescribes too. Using colours of the American flag the logo highlights 'White' and 'Race' in the american blue and the other words in the colours of white and red. The words 'White' and 'Race' have been highlighted in the same colour to subtly suggest the facist side to Trump, a person who if had the chance would only want a pure, white american race.

From the start the games political agenda is obvious that Trump isn't view in a positive light and will be mocked and insulted. Even from changing Trump's surname to Trumpft lets the users know that Trump’s background is German so they can see the irony in his words when he constantly attacks immigrants coming into America.

The app logo was created last when all the levels and animation was finished. It allowed many options and opportunities to really figure out how the app logo should be presented. The biggest issue was to consider whether or not the app logo needed the logo within it or not. The logo would certainly explain what the app was called but the logo could only be used on a white background due to clashing of colours. By using the logo it wouldn’t be as visually exciting especially when you’re trying to sell such a vibrant game full of excitement and humour to the public and present them with a dull logo on a white background for their first impression. The other option was the use an image for the app logo. The visual would be the campaign visual used across the number of promotional material/collateral. For starters the consistency would still be there and if people saw the promotional material scattered around their city out and then spotted the app logo in the app store it would be instantly recognisable. Another big factor of using the visual would be the appealing nature of it. The image is vibrant, engaging and exciting, making it an app logo that would attract users attention, sparking their imagination and curiosity — the visual also acts as a little teaser because they see Trump and other main characters within the game.

In the end the visual logo was chosen over the type only version. Below you can see how they appear on an actual iPhone.
