Studio Brief 1 - Secret 7 - Final Designs

The sleeve below is based off Max Richter's Dream 3and it demonstrates the euphoric calm nature of the song. As an instrumental song without any lyrics the sleeve had to visually showcase a deep understand of the songs message and tone. The final resolution for the song was based around the comments Max himself expressed. When asked about the songs meaning he said "It’s an eight-hour lullaby" and "It’s my personal lullaby for a frenetic world, A manifesto for a slower pace of existence". Taking aboard these comments, the designs concept and message of the final visual communicate the theme of a dream state. The 'dream state' is still a wide avenue to go down but the final resolution is based of the wide spectrum of the mind that isn't known about, a balance of the mind and life.

Heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement and the idea of meditation and tranquillity the final visual was created. The decision behind the stack of shapes was to show tranquillity and balance of the mind, while the unforgiving solid black circle is the gateway through a different part of the mind, unseen and lock away somewhere within our subconscious mind. The shapes are set up to all counter balance each other to represent balance and harmony while being closely linked to the meditation technique of stacking stones. The shapes are also reminiscent of the famous Bauhaus shapes of the triangle, square and circle.

The colour scheme is to strengthen the message of harmony and meditation by creating a natural colour scheme the design also showcases a contemporary style with the black to white gradient, again also linking back to the modern aesthetics of Bauhaus.

The second sleeve i entered was for Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better. When I went to the exhibition last year I manage to see David Shrigley artwork. He's artwork was simplistic and humorous, summing up he's concept by using handwritten text. David Shrigley was the main influence behind this idea.

The idea behind Secret 7 is to design a sleeve in which you are not allowed to put the artist's name or the track name on the sleeve. With this in mind, my concept for the sleeve was to play around with this concept as the name of the song fitted in with this idea effectively. The finished sleeve is self explanatory with the text saying "I was going to put the title of the track on the sleeve but Secret 7 said the less I know the better". The text clearly communicates the idea of humoursly talking about not putting the title of the song on the sleeve but subtly doing it as the title of the track can be cleverly embedded within the sentence.

The overall style is modern, by having black text on top of a white background the text becomes centre of attention without any distractions, making the concept and message as clear as possible. In relation to the handwriting I thought it would be best to have a handwritten style instead of digital text to make the concept more natural and authentic, making it more engaging and tangible for the audience to relate to on a personal level instead of a overused digital text. An imperfect/messy style to again give the overall look more authenticity and rawness. The upper case letters make the text more legible for the audience to see within a split second especially when the sleeve is on the self among other sleeves.
