Studio Brief 2 - D&AD Telegraph - Good and Bad Problems with the Collaboration

Overall working with Lo has been very eye opening, beneficial and interesting to see how we both handled the brief. Both of us have worked together a number of times in a group setting. The other advantage was me and Lo both have a similar style to some extent and throughout this year we have been trying to implement a contemporary style to our work. This way I knew that we would like the same kind of work and style. Even though all the above was very beneficial from the onset, as an individual I don't like working within a group. Since college I was never a person to benefit greatly from working within a group. But I needed to get over that and try my best working with Lo to give us the best chance to succeed at The Telegraph brief.

The bad

I found two issues when working with Lo. The first one being taste, even though I said we had the same taste, we still disagreed about the layout of the app and how it should look. It was mainly small details and not the overall style but the way we got over this issue was to both create our own versions of how we thought it should look and then present them to each other and discuss which one was best suited for the brief, intended audience and the concept, which normally solved the situation.

The other issue was myself being a bit demanding. Even though Lo wanted to work on this brief she didn't have a lot of knowledge of User experience/Ui design and mainly picked the brief because she wanted to see if it was an area she wanted to specialise in. Also where I just finished working on another UX/UI brief (BBC Crimewatch) I felt like I had learnt a lot of processes and skills from it and wanted to applying them to the Telegraph brief. This cause a bit of conflicting between me and Lo, from my perspective I knew what needed to be done and how to do it, from Lo's perspective I was probably being very pushy and came across as if I knew it all, which I think made her very nervous about presenting ideas she had done for the brief incase I would be judgmental towards her work. So the only way we solved this issue was for me to communicate ideas more openly with her and not be so critical and precious about the every aspect of the brief. I tried to not be as pushy and remove my ego from the situation and simply allowed her the confidence to design without fear of judgment. In the end Lo ended up creating a lot of the final mock ups for Your Telegraph.

The good

Overall, the both of us worked great as a team and without her I wouldn't have been able to complete the animation in time for the deadline, as I had already created a final resolution in a form of a video for Crimewatch, we both decided the best option to communicate the final resolution would to create a video for Your Telegraph. I instantly knew the pressure that was put on my shoulders to create another animated video. I was still very new to after effects and me being a perfectionist I wanted to create the best interactive video I could possible create but in return I knew it would take me a while to do.

Once all the final visuals were finished Lo organised all the files which included packaging all different sections and sorting all the layers from the static finals. She organised the files and made sure that any changes I needed was done within a moments notice; from the surface it may not seem a lot off work but if I was left to do it, it would have added hours upon hours of added time because how complex and tedious some of the animation was. This created a very strong teamwork between the both of us and without it everything would have fell apart.
