Studio Brief 1 - D&AD Crimewatch - Feedback, Early app mockup

As my idea was finalised on paper, I mocked up the interface of the app. As you can see below The interface is showing what It'll look like once the navigation has expanded. The problem with the design is the size of the navigation panel. It became challenging to gather whether or not the navigation panel is to small. Creating the app on screen is different to how it will look on a real iPhone. The user journey needed to be highly considered. Questions such as can the user read the text, is it too small on the screen, can their fingers comfortable control the navigation and is it functionable are all questions that will help me solve the issue.

The next step is to show people in the class and get their feedback on the size and functionality. I gave around 6 people the mocked up design on my phone and asked them whether it's to small or not. Other questions I asked was whether they thought they could comfortable navigate the navigation without interference from other features on the app.

Everyone apart from one person said it was too small. The person who said the size was perfectly fine said something around the lines off (I forgot how he said it) "I like this size because it's not interfering to much with the other features on the app like the video. The person using the app could view the navigation while still using the 360º video."

Everyone else suggested that I should at least increase the size of the navigation to half way. It was clear on the iPhone that the size needed to change. The screen impaired my size reference so when everyone had it in their hands it was obvious that the current size was too small.

I agree with the one person who said they liked it at the original size. My original idea was to be able to have the navigation open while still be able to use the 360º feature but as I've already said it was clear that the navigation was just too small. Visually it looked cramped and looked as if it was just stuck in a corner. The navigation is meant to be the hub for the user. It's a place where they can come and plan their investigation, collect images and come up with hypothesis about the crime but the scale of the current navigation wouldn’t be able to achieve this. More space will allow the app to flow and give a sense of easiness to the app. More space will also mean that the user wouldn't have to scroll down as much, therefore making the user journey that one bit better for the user.
