Studio Brief 1 - Secret 7 - Songs & Analytical Thinking

For this years Secret 7 competition the selection of song choices are:

  • CHVRCHES - CLEAREST BLUE
  • ETTA JAMES - AT LAST
  • JACK GARRATT - WORRY
  • THE JAM - ART SCHOOL
  • JOHN LENNON - IMAGINE
  • MAX RICHTER - DREAM 3
  • TAME IMPALA - THE LESS I KNOW THE BETTER
After listening to all seven songs I couldn't narrow my choice down to just one song to create a sleeve for. The biggest problem is to not go for the most popular choice that most people will choose, in this case that would be either John Lennon's imagine and Chvrches's Clearest Blue. Both of these songs are well publicised and especially Imagine as it's one of the most well known songs around.

In order to give yourself the best chance to win a place within the exhibition the best analytical approach is to pick a song that not a lot of people have heard off and are most unlikely to choose from. For example Max Richter song Dream 3 is an instrumental song with no lyrics, therefore it's more of a challenge for designer to come up with a concept for a song with no lyrics, they will have to think more deeply and conduct more in depth research to explore the songs meaning and that's something not a lot of people would want to deal with when they can choose a song like John Lennon's Imagine and easily come up with a number of strong concepts.

Once I move on with my development, I will keep this analytic approach in mind when I start to think of ideas and concepts for certain songs.
