Studio Brief 2 - D&AD Telegraph - Target Audience

The Telegraphs current target audience is aimed at the middle class and caters for ages between 30+ but personally I would say the majority of Telegraphs loyal readers are aged around 45+. The Telegraph is one of the UK's oldest newspaper so it should be evident in they're branding to see how the current site is aimed towards an older demographic. However, Telegraph wants to change this statistic, they want a unique digital solution with the integration of younger readers. Once we both starting coming up with concepts for the brief It's important to understand how to design a product that is relevant to all audiences. If we create a news app that showcases complex animations and transitions the younger readers would find it beneficial, appealing and ground breaking but the less tech savvy audience, which is the majority of older readers would find that kind of platform difficult to use, therefore boycotting the site and finding alternative options like The Guardian that will cater to their needs.

On the other hand if you create a product that is very simple, text heavy and stripped back the older generation would find this appealing and useful for reading and digesting news but the younger people would find the app dull, unattractive and not ground breaking enough to retain their loyalty, therefore like the older demographic, boycott the paper and find exciting alternatives like Mashable and Flipboard. With this in mind It's important to find a perfect balance between the two and come up with a solution that gives the younger readers a unique product and the loyal readers a platform that’s simple to use.
